gmmpAt 10:20 p.m. on 29 March, the 1,500,000th vehicle rolled off General Motors Manufacturing Poland’s assembly lines at the Gliwice plant.

The car,  a red Astra IV ecoFLEX powered by a 1.3 litre turbocharged diesel engine, will be supplied to Austria.

The Gliwice plant currently produces two Astra models: Astra III Saloon and a 5-door Astra IV. In Autumn 2011, the factory will launch production of a 3-door Astra GTC. In addition, production of a compact convertible will be launched in 2013. The Gliwice factory is the main manufacturer of Astra-based models in Europe.

”Thanks to our advanced quality assurance system and experience of effectively launching and producing new models, our factory has been consistently developing and taking on more and more people. After increasing production of Astra IV’s, we started working on a three-shift basis after employing more than 500 people in 2010, and we’re planning to create another 150 jobs in 2011,” said Andrzej Korpak, director of GM Manufacturing Poland’s Gliwice plant.

The Gliwice plant started production in 1998 and is now operating on a three-shift basis, employing around 3000 people. In 2010, more than 158,700 vehicles rolled off the company’s assembly lines.
